Gardening + Natural Dyeing at Wing & A Prayer Farm 2- 4:00 p.m. EST
Explore the natural dye garden in Vermont this summer with farmer/dyer Tammy White and learn all about plants that you can grow, the colors you can expect to harvest, and how to bring pigments from nature to the fibers you love to work with. From kettle-dyed yarns to contact-printing from petals, this is a class that introduces, delights, and explores the richness of natural dyeing. Take notes and make your lists based on the presentation so that you’ll be able to create your own palettes—be they for watercolors, fabric painting, or dyeing your own garments or yarns. You’ll have a good foundation for creating your own garden for dyeing whether you want to start small with a pot on the windowsill, create a corner on your terrace, or plot it out in your backyard. This class does not require stitching experience as it is about gardening and dyeing. Any type of fiber artist might enjoy learning these skills!
Lecture: Nature’s Palette: How to Coax Color from Petals, Leaves, Roots, and Barks 4:30-5:30 p.m. EST
Learn how to create a rainbow of colors from the natural world around you. Tammy White shares her knowledge of botanical dyeing by demonstrating a variety of methods of extraction and a myriad of materials loaded with pigment. You'll learn how to create new, secondary colors using modifiers and color-mixing if you’re only able to access a few natural dye stuffs for your first dye-adventures. You’ll also learn about making your own paints and inks from the garden or the kitchen. The lecture is designed to prepare you for your own experimenting and instruction for lasting results.
